i was in my beloved paris for fashion week, but it may as well have been panem’s district 1 (hunger games). why? the exclusionary parties, the starved women dressed in miniskirts (it was 50 degrees) prancing from show to show in their ubers, and most obnoxiously, the million dollars a fashion house will spend on a show that lasts 5 minutes, showing overpriced and unwearable trendy collections that will go out of style by next season. i find such ostentation appalling.
i’ve often imagined we’re being puppeteered by two old billionaire men who keep us focused on consuming and distracted from what’s really going on: the selfish few creating an irreversible mess of this planet while stealing its resources and from its people.
the one notable exception, was my dear friend kristy caylor and her luxury brand, Maiyet. sourced from master craftsmen from around the world (indonesia, india, columbia, italy, mongolia, kenya and peru), and they are committed to training and developing artisan businesses. she is not a scam, she doesn’t donate a half of a percent of nothing; she is on the ground, traveling to these countries and creating beautiful and unique pieces. i am glad the industry is at the very least able to recognize her talent.
my friend asked, “why are you so angry? just ignore it?” IGNORE IT??! what the f* will that change?! NOTHING. if you wanna know what your next step is, i say look at what impassions AND angers you… let anger spark change!
so, if i don’t want to take part in that world (which i don’t), then i must create the world in which I DO. while none of these thoughts are original, even by me, this experience reignited my devotion to the change. i have gone too long keeping myself and my company small, fearful of growth and responsibility.
so i write this entry to be witnessed and held accountable by you. it is time to play big!!! over the past few weeks i’ve asked for a plan and i’m getting clear answers: i will create an all encompassing lifestyle brand for women and children (eventually men too, once one inspires me) based on affordability/value/quality, beauty, comfort, consciousness, multi-functionality and magic. i will open stores all over the world, as well as an interactive online store, to make these collections of the ‘perfect basics’ available to all… so that we can stop distracting ourselves with such ridiculous indulgences and get on with our lives and what needs to get done!!!
it is my goal to be the ‘human’s designer’.
